Financial Planning for Hitting The Road

Filthy lucre.

Beginning a nomadic lifestyle brings freedom, adventure and the opportunity to simplify. It also needs some financial forethought.

1. Understand Your Costs

Start with a realistic budget. Some of your basic expenses will include:

  • Fuel: One of your largest ongoing costs. Track mileage and plan routes carefully.
  • Food: Prioritize cooking your own meals over dining out.
  • Campsites and Parking: Many places are free, but some may require a small fee.
  • Maintenance: Factor in repairs for your vehicle or equipment.
  • Insurance: Ensure coverage for health, vehicle, and belongings.

Insider insight: Truth is, once you’re living the life you’ll often move so slowly that the fuel costs are almost negligible. Your freedom of movement will reduce costs of food and nearly always you’ll cook for yourself or have someone cook for you rather than eating out – more on this elsewhere. Some people prefer paid camping while others avoid it diligently.

A lot of maintenance you’ll do yourself in your newly found free time, and as for insurance I recommend the bare minimum. I don’t have much faith in insurance, but your circumstances will dictate what you need.

Building an Emergency Fund.

Sh*t happens to nomads as well, be it a breakdown or a medical issue. Aim to save at least three months’ worth of expenses before you hit the road.

Coins
Count carefully.

Diversify Your Income Streams

A steady income is vital for long-term nomadism. Consider:

  • Remote work or freelancing
  • Seasonal or gig economy jobs
  • Selling handmade goods or offering services online

We’ll be examining income and the diverse ways of making a buck while you’re on the road. There are many, many possibilities just waiting for you to spot them!

Minimize Debt

Simplify your finances by paying off high-interest debt. The fewer obligations you have, the easier it is to embrace life on the move.

Quite simply, debt is the devil. The sooner you rid yourself of it, the sooner you find freedom.

Frugality is the New Black!

Even if you don’t have many funds, you can still manage as long as you play the game right. This means never being wasteful, and carefully, patiently purchasing only when you really have to.

TIP! Try to buy food in season, and everything else out of season. eg. Don’t wait for summer to buy shorts – they’ll be cheaper in autumn or winter. Think longer-term. If you don’t need the item now, wait till you find it cheap.

TIP! Wherever possible, try to buy multiples of the foods  and drinks you use most. It saves a stack of time and fuel when you don’t have to drive into town every time you run out of coffee or whatever.

TIP! If you’re driving through a larger town with an ALDI, stop and top up your staple foods and basic needs. It not only saves to buy there, it saves you the fuel on going to a town with ALDI etc. when there’s only IGA near where you’re at.
Apologies IGA, very convenient, good store and all, but who can afford it?

Plan for the Future

Even while living nomadically, it’s important to think ahead. Contribute to savings or retirement funds when possible and try to ensure you have a financial safety net.

Your Input is Welcome!

What tips have helped you thrive financially on the road? Share your insights and experiences in the comments or contact us directly. Your contributions can help build a valuable resource for others embarking on this journey!

With thoughtful planning and a little creativity, financial freedom on the road is achievable; one step, one dollar, one adventure at a time.

I’m probably the last person who should be offering financial advice. I do have a neat little system for saving and allocating funds to be where they need to be though.

Life is yours.   Waste no time.
