Feeling Trapped?

Break Free from the B.S. & Build a Life That’s Truly Yours.

Do you feel powerless, or like you’re on the brink of losing it all? Or are you just exhausted by the endless grind? There’s another way. I’ve lived it and I’m still living it.
I want to show you how. You’ve got options… let’s explore them.

Go on... I'm listening.

About me.

Marley [4+ years Nomadic] is part writer, part designer, part techie, part gardener and part music lover. How many parts are we allowed? Part space engineer (Upwork wouldn’t let me use that one), part… enough already – that’s enough parts!

Born and raised in western Victoria; I’ve lived in about 50 places and travelled very slowly in Australia, Nepal, India, Thailand and Indonesia. Now my self-built home rolls on rubber.

Fearing, facing, or experiencing homelessness?

I feel your pain – total dread, like my entire being turned to cold, wet concrete and felt like it would plunge out through my fundamental orifice into the abyss.

I felt that dread myself, and I managed to exchange it for a completely new and totally different life that I love so much I can hardly express.

I made this blog because I feel like it could make a difference. If it helps drag even one person out of that desperate ditch then it will be worth every minute I’ve spent on it.

What is the purpose of Life Unmapped?

Things aint getting any easier are they? People are hurting. When the structures we rely on crumble, life can be very unforgiving.

If you’ve read this far would it be fair to assume you’re either facing hard times or questioning the path you’ve followed so far? Or both?

The right information can help turn it around. Life Unmapped is more than just a travel blog, or a digital nomads blog – it attempts to explain the process, the transition, from the quiet desperation of the humdrum 9-to-5 lifestyle to the lighter, freer, more manageable lifestyle of the nomad.

It’s a place to talk real, offer practical help and spur a bit of soul-searching for those struggling with their lot.

Life Unmapped will at least give you some ideas and illustrate how, with some decisive moves you can start afresh & have a much better life in Version 2.0.

Ahem. Point of order. There are various things presented on the site that, if you were to purchase them I could make a small commission to help cover outlays – at no extra cost to you. As a sometimes hungry nomad I would kiss the ground you stand on if you do buy something, but that’s entirely up to you.

What gave rise to the idea?

The seeds of the idea of living small began years ago when my very first boss suggested I should buy a motorhome and the savings would allow me to save the money for a house.

I never took his advice, but it rattled around somewhere in the back of my mind until years later.

Around about 2013, I began to examine non-traditional ways of living. I was feeling trapped in the outer suburbs, every day dragging on and on – endlessly repeating the same old depressing 9-5 drudgery, sitting agitated in traffic for hours. Something had to change.

After relentlessly reading some of the original blogs about vanlife, stealth-camping and building stealth-campers I began the hunt for a vehicle. It took me a while to find something suitable as I’m too tall for most vans.

I saw an old step-van a few suburbs away in the Trading Post (newspaper) and that was it. It was suitably cheap and I put a deposit on it that morning before work. Long story short I got it home and it needed about $4K spent on it to get it roadworthy which was to be expected considering the price.

So I got the work done and slowly set about planning the interior which was a bare shell. I took a chair in there and dreamed and measured and sketched and researched and dreamed some more.

Slowly I began gathering materials, continually remeasuring and replanning. Ended up my resolve wasn’t all it could have been.
I procrastinated for another 5-6 years, taking far too much notice of the various negativity coming from those around me about the whole idea.

To my credit I never fully gave up on it and continued to gather the various ingredients so that when the time did come I had most of what I needed.

I lost my job due to the long COVID lockdowns of 2020. This, compounded with other circumstances outside my control, turned things upside down and yanked my sense of security out from under me so abruptly it shook my world – even though I’d been half-heartedly preparing for that eventuality for a while.

I made the decision to knuckle down with the build to avoid having to re-enter the shared rental market, or even worse face homelessness. Turns out the timing couldn’t have been better and by the time the ‘ring-of-steel’ was lifted I was ready to leave. I never looked back and I now know it’s the best decision I ever made.

I could, and should have done better, ie. moved more decisively.
If I could humbly suggest, so should you!

What it’ll cover:

I’ll work through preparing for change, getting started, adapting to a new way of living, living the life, philosophy and inspiration, the highs and lows of life on the road and a whole lot more valuable content to help you on your way.

I’ll even reveal a system that’s like a safety-net for nomads, with a myriad of benefits. No, it has nothing to do with centrelink.

What would really invigorate the whole thing is if you share your feelings, your thoughts, your fears, your hardships and your insights by email or in the comments.

To balance it out I’ll spice it up with anecdotes about my travels here and abroad, off-the-beaten-path inspiration and tips for making travel more meaningful. There’s heaps to share.

A Win-Win Situation.

I’m going to mention the term win-win situation here and there. On various levels, it applies to how you’ll come to see your situation when you find your bearings and settle in to the new lifestyle.

But it also applies to something that doesn’t yet exist – a system I’ve seen a real need for, and I want to see if I can develop it.

I’ll be blogging about that later on. If it can be developed it will change the lives of so many people in desperate need. The prospect of it excites me.

If you’re reading this, I’m so happy for you. You got lucky. Soon you’ll know how you can turn things around. Then it’s up to you to decide.

It’s not for everyone, we’re all different. The opportunities are there though, so if you dare, you win!

Are there topics you need to know more about?
